FAQ

Where will we meet?
Our first few meetings will be on Zoom. Zoom gives us maximum scheduling flexibility that will help us get started straight away. After the first few meetings, we have the added option of in-person observations and coaching sessions, either in your home or places where you go with your child. Any parent therapy sessions will continue on Zoom for now; however, this could change.
How will you get to know my child?

During our first session, we focus on your child. Before we meet, you’ll fill out our Capable questionnaire about your child’s abilities and emotional habits. It takes 10-20 minutes to complete and will give us greater clarity about their daily difficulties. Then, we go into depth about what is happening.

You didn’t ask, but….

We devote the second session to your daily routines and home life and the third to your needs as parents and adult humans, finishing with a customized plan of action!

What if my child has special needs?

We have worked with children/families with a wide variety of special needs: mild to severe Cerebral Palsy, mild to severe autism, many different genetically based issues, and combinations of all of the above.

Regardless of the label or diagnosis, we start with the Capable Questionnaire and what it reveals about the child’s brain-based capacity. From there, we work with parents to build a plan that hits the sweet spot of challenging a child without over-frustrating them.

How long does it take to get through the first three sessions?
The first three sessions may take anywhere from one to three weeks, depending on your schedule and needs.
How do we get started?
The first step is to call or text to let us know you’re looking for help with your child. We will set up a call to describe what’s happening now and what you hope to change. If we think we can help, we’ll explain how we work. If you think we’re a good fit for your family, we will schedule the first appointment.
Do you do therapy with children?

Capable Families specializes in working with parents and children together, rather than children alone. We are passionate about how children’s hearts and minds develop through relationships with their parents’ hearts and minds.

So that’s what we do.

What if I already have a therapist, but I still need answers about what to do with my child?
If you’re already working with a therapist but want practical coaching with everyday life, we can help. We can collaborate with your therapist if that seems helpful to you.
We, the parents, need to get on the same page with disciplining our child. Can you help?

Yes! When a child struggles, it is common for parents to have disagreements and confusion about discipline.

Together, we can build a shared understanding of your child’s capacity and, based on that understanding, develop a discipline plan that works for each parent. We also offer parent therapy for couples to help them become partners in raising their child(ren).

Are you okay with dogs and cats?

Yes! When/if we visit your home, we will enjoy meeting any pets in your life. Snakes, fish, and birds, too. We happen to live with dogs.

How long have Colette and Jennifer known each other?

30+ years!

We became friends before either of us had children. Now, between us, we have five grown-up children. Over the years, we’ve supported each other through our parenting ups and downs (yes, we totally had them), and we shared about our professional work with families. That’s how we knew we wanted to work together.
