People just don’t understand.
When people see a child, they make instant assumptions about what they can do, based on their apparent age. But often, they may overestimate, underestimate, or even some of both.
If your child doesn’t fit the mold, it can be more than frustrating. It can be maddening – even heartbreaking – for both of you.
It feels terrible to see your child misunderstood. But it’s even worse to be misunderstood. And let’s face it: being misunderstood does nothing to improve behavior.
Sometimes, though, it isn’t just other people.
It can be confusing for you, too, especially when your child has mixed abilities!
One day, they might recite a whole book they heard last week but not remember what you told them ten seconds ago.
Perhaps they talk constantly – yet fail to answer simple questions.
One trip to the grocery store might go perfectly, but the next may result in a total meltdown.
Or you ask them to do something that should take only a few minutes. Instead of doing it, they spend the next hour arguing about it.
Why!?!?!
Concerned about their development, angry at their behavior, sad about their pain – you just don’t know what to do.
How much longer can either of you go on this way?
If you’re feeling completely bewildered, you’re certainly not alone.
Just imagine it…
What if you could get really clear on what your child is ready to learn – and how to teach them?
What if you were confident about setting expectations and holding your child accountable?
What if you knew exactly how much to help them – and how much they could do for themselves?
And what if you could let some things go for now, until your child is ready?
Let’s turn imagination into reality.
All these things – and more – are possible.
I’ve worked with thousands of children and young adults with mixed abilities (a.k.a. ASD, ADHD, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and more), observing, evaluating, and getting to the root of difficult behavior.
And I can help you and your child get there, too. I’ll support you and troubleshoot with you as you tackle each new challenge.
I’ll help you face each day in sustainable ways – no longer dreading, but looking forward, instead.
